Introduction
Rank is an 8-player anonymous game mode, where you play competitively for RP (Rank Points) and spots on the leaderboard.
The basic game mechanics are the same as in a normal 8-player Normal Game Mode, except everybody gets a number instead of their usernames for anonymity. At the end of the game, the players of the team that won get RP, the losers lose RP, and then every player gets to choose a person they want to give their MVP to. If you get more than one MVP, the rest of the MVPs turn to Luna that you can spend in the store.
Main
Note: civs = Civilians aka Citizen Team, specs = Special Citizen Roles.
When entering a Rank game, you have to be prepared for a much more serious playstyle than the casual one in Channel 1. Main points to keep in mind of:
- The other players expect fast leads and fast claims. Always say your lead first and then later your role. If you are late to say your lead as Cop/Detective/Mentalist, people will trust you less, which can cause a loss. The same applies if you are late to claim your role.
- You have to actively show that you are trying to figure out who are the mafiosos no matter which team you belong to. Being silent, reducing time / not extending time will look suspicious.
- If the Mafia successfully kill Night 1, you have to lynch somebody as a Citizen. If you don’t vote or balance the votes, it’s almost a guaranteed win for the Mafia team, unless there’s a Priest, Politician or Prophet to save the day.
- To elaborate, the game always starts with 3 Mafia players (2 mafiosos + 1 helper) and 5 Citizens (1 cop/vigi, 1 doc, 3 specs). When mafiosos kill Night 1, they will most likely shoot a Citizen, making it “3 mafs vs 4 civs”. No lynch means that the mafia only need to kill one more player the next day to win. If you lynch someone, there’s at least a chance you lynched a mafioso.
- As long as the number of alive players is odd, civs need to lynch a Mafia Team member. If the number is even, civs can skip voting and wait for more leads next day.
- Because everyone will be using their Deducing Decks, you need to know all possible Card Skills as well.
Claiming one role Day 1, and then changing to a different one later on is normal, but is done by both mafiosos and civs. Keep track of the changes and amend your memo when needed.
- Some people “hide” by claiming a different role than their own so that Mafia avoids shooting them. Examples:
- Some people “bait” by claiming a different role than their own so that Mafia is tempted to shoot them. Examples:
Basic Strategies
The following covers some of the basic rank strategies. As it only focuses on the fundamentals, it lacks the ways Card Skills affect many games. More elaborate strategies will be available on the Advanced page soon!
Mafia
The first night is the most important for the Mafia Team. That’s when you need to make a plan with your co-mafia. Some of the most common claim-strategies:
- Spec + Doc – claiming any spec role and doc to make it look like the real Cop/Vigi died, because there’s usually two Cop claims.
- Cop/Vigi + Doc + Spec – if helper meets Night 1, you can ask the helper to claim Cop and then claim Doc and Spec with your Mafia partner.
If you agree to be Cop, prepare to claim fast and fake a lead. You can clean a random player, or you accuse them of being Mafia. If you clean the real cop on accident, try to appeal that he is a helper. You can also clean your co-mafia (but that will make the real Doctor trust you less) or you can accuse your co-mafia of being mafia (but that might make you lose your partner).
If you agree to be Vigi, you can either claim that you didn’t purge Night 1 (makes it hard to argue though, because you have “no leads”), or you can random clean any player.
If you claim a spec, you can choose to claim:
- a role that is unlikely to get lynched Day 1 (Martyr, Politician, Judge)
- a role with which you can provide more leads to confuse the civs (Psychic, Detective, Mentalist)
- an important role that civs wouldn’t want to lose (Reporter, Priest)
- a role that doesn’t have to do much or can’t be proven fast (Soldier, Prophet)
If you agree to be Doc, you can try faking a Doc Code (explained later), but it’s not that necessary. Don’t forget to be active even if the attention isn’t on you. Try not to show which cop you are siding with, or side with the real cop (that way, real doc might get confused and vote the real cop, while thinking you are their teammate).
Card Skills can influence your plans significantly. Always check with your co-mafia if they have any Tier 4 skills that might help.
Mafia Helpers
Spy
As Spy, you have the advantage of having the chance to meet the Mafia and discuss your strategy on Night 1. After waiting approx. 5-10 seconds for a Bullhorn, you should select a player to check. There can be three outcomes to this:
- You will check a mafioso and meet. In that case, they will most likely ask you to claim Cop or Vigilante, because if a real Cop or Vigi checks you and says you are clean, it will make them look suspicious. You can check the Mafia strategies above to see tips how to fake these roles.
- You will check a Citizen. Because you didn't meet the Mafia and don't know their plans, it's best to claim a Spec. Depending on what kind of civ you found, you can try framing them, i.e.:
- if you find a Cop or Doc, you can claim Det and say that "<Player number> touched <Dead player number>", making it look like they shot the dead person.
- if you find any spec, you can claim Menta and say that "<Player number> and <Dead player number> diff teams", making it look like the player you found is a Helper.
- You will check a Soldier and activate their [Night Watch] ability. You should always claim Soldier in that case and accuse the real Soldier of being spy.
If you don't meet Mafia Night 1, then your goal is to meet them during Night 2 or as soon as possible.
After you meet Mafia, your next goal becomes to check the "hiding" and "baiting" roles (read: Main) and relying that information to the mafiosos so they could know who to shoot. For example, you check the player that claimed Martyr, but it turns out they are Politician. You should advice the mafia to shoot that player.
Hostess
As Hostess, your primary goal is to use your seduction skill to stop as many Citizens as needed from using their skills. The first target to seduce in most games is usually the Doctor - if the real Doc can't heal, then the Mafia can shoot all the important roles they need. The only exception is if the votes are balancing and there's a chance to lynch a Citizen - then you should help Mafia with voting them. Other important roles to seduce include:
- Gang – to prevent you or the mafiosos from getting punched (if you get punched, you can't seduce because you can't vote, making your role useless);
- Vigilante – in case they have Creed.
- Martyr/Poli/Judge – if they are getting tested, you can seduce them to ruin their testable skills (read: Mart/Magi/Poli/Judge test here). Note: seducing Magician won't prevent them from using their skill.
Because meeting the Mafia is not a priority, it's best to claim a role that mafiosos won't be tempted to shoot. Roles like Soldier, Hacker, Magi, Mart are great for Hostess to hide in.
Thief
Thief is a bit of a Wild Card when it comes to Mafia Helpers. As Thief, the ways you can help the mafia team strongly rely on the type of specs you get in your game. The best one for Thief are:
- Poli – if you are getting lynched after stealing Poli, you will waste a day for civs, giving Mafia a second chance to kill.
- Mart – if you are getting lynched after stealing Martyr, you can take an important civilian with you to death (i.e. Doc, Vigi, Cop, etc.).
- Priest – if a mafioso gets lynched and Priest hasn't used her [Revive] skill yet, you can revive the mafioso and make the previous civilian lynch be pointless.
- Gang – punching a civilian to take away a civ vote (if you aren't sure whos Mafia and who's civ, just punch the gang himself).
If there is a player using Bullhorn Night 1, you should steal from their chat message. If you steal during Night 1, you can steal again on Day 1 anyways, so stealing from a Bullhorn message is almost always beneficial. Stealing a role like Mentalist and then using [Observation] to compare her and a random player can give you a hint who is Mafia/Civ. Stealing Cop is even more ideal because Thief can meet by using stolen [Search]. Stealing a Doctor is also good – you can heal yourself if Mafia shoots you and claim Doc.
The more information you gather during Night 1, the better. Be careful though! There are Soldiers with Bullhorn skill, so if you feel like that player is baiting, resist stealing them!
If there was no Bullhorn, then you'll need to steal on Day 1. For the sake of helping your team better, it's best to steal one of the two Cop or Vigi claims, as they are the most likely to get lynched Day 1. After stealing one of them, you find out who you should side with and give more support. You don't need to try to steal one of them as soon as possible – take some time to analyze the situation at first and decide what's the best course of action.
Beast Man
Beast Man is the strongest killing role in the game, able to "eat through" many of civilian skills, if they meet the Mafia. There are two ways he can meet – by getting shot or by selecting the same victim as the Mafia during the night. Unless you meet Night 1 by luck, your main game plan should focus on avoiding getting shot (it wastes a kill for the Mafia) and targeting players that are most likely to get killed by Mafia with your [Craving] skill.
If you don't meet Mafia Night 1, you need to try your best to meet them Night 2. Look at the overall remaining players and try to consider which one of them are the biggest threat to the Mafia Team. Top priority roles to get rid of are, of course:
- Roles that can find Mafia – Cop, Vigi, Rep, Det, Menta.
- Roles that can save the game if Civilians don't lynch / lynch wrong – Poli, Prop, Priest, Doc.
As BM can't meet and discuss strategy with the mafiosos before Day 1 begins, it's best to claim a spec. The options for BMs are limitless, so feel free to claim any spec role you are comfortable faking, but the two most common are:
- Soldier – you avoid getting shot + hard to prove if you are real or fake.
- Martyr – the same way as Martyr, you can move your skill around at night, so it's a good claim in case Detective checks you + civilians will be hesitant to lynch you (no one wants to lose just because a Martyr was lynched and took the wrong player with them).
Witch
As Witch, you have the same kind of advantage as Spy – the chance to meet Mafia's Night 1. The difference is that because hex only triggers 10 seconds before daytime, you will have little time to discuss strategy with your Mafia partner. Keep in mind, the Mafioso that you hex will NOT see your chats with his co-mafia. Regardless, like an unwritten rule, 90% of the time both mafiosos will expect you to claim either Cop or Vigi. You can check the Mafia strategies above to see tips how to fake these roles. In the case you don't meet Night 1, you still come out from it knowing at least one player that is 100% innocent. You can choose to frame them by:
- Claiming Det, stating that the player you hexed didn't move or that their last touch was the dead player;
- Claiming Menta, stating that the player you hexed is on a different team from the dead.
You can also choose to hide. It's sometimes more useful to claim roles like Hacker, Martyr or Soldier, in case the hexed players reveal there's a Witch. If you claim something important like Priest, Poli, Rep, Menta, you might just put a target on yourself. Mafiosos that know there's a witch that could hex the doctor and shoot more boldly.
The main roles you should hex are Doc and Vigi (good to hex in case they have Card Skills Creed). In this sense, Witch is kind of like Hostess when it comes to strategy. Unless you meet Night 1, you should prioritize hexing civilians over meeting Mafia.
Mad Scientist
As MadSci, if you survive the first night, your main goal is to get lynched as soon as possible, preferably Day 1. To do so, you need to strike the perfect balance of "being suspicious, but not too suspicious". You want to get lynched, but you don't want others to know that, because civs obviously don't want to lynch a MadSci. Ways to do it:
- Claim Cop and random frame someone as a mafioso. Risks – 1) you might frame an actual mafioso; 2) since one of the mafiosos will most likely claim cop too, you risk making them suspicious by confirming all specs (if there's three cops and two docs, it confirms that the alive specs are 100% real).
- Claim Menta and say two random players are on the same team (a higher chance of accidently putting two specs / two cops / two doctors as same role, making you sus).
- Claim Magi/Mart/Poli/Judge and get civilians to put you on the lynch chair for a "test".
Principal Citizens
Cop
Cop is one of the most challenging roles in rank. Your goal is to find the mafia and get them lynched. In most games you're going to be counter claimed by someone from the mafia team. Since a cop cc gets lynched day 1, you're going to have to convince the citizens that you are the real cop on the first day.
Here's some tips to be convincing:
- Give fast leads and when you checked. Even before claiming your role, say your leads as soon as you can. Claiming cop or giving late leads will seem like you're stalling to give fake leads after seeing the roles people have claimed. Checking someone fast eliminates the chances of being hexed or checking a hexed person since hexed people, including mafia, will show as not a member of the mafia.
- Be active and lead the game. Stating your leads alone isn't enough. If you appear to be passive the civs are more likely to lynch you even if you have mafia leads. You need to state facts, start assuming roles based on other roles leads, team with confirmed roles if any and get the civs on the same page to lynch your cc or your mafia lead.
- If you have mafia leads, you should be pushing your lead and your cc if there is one. If you clean a doc then you should assume there's a high chance that the doc cc is mafia, but do not rule out hypocrisy.
- If your cc states that there isn't a doc cc when there is, you should say the reason your cc only sees 1 doc is because they can't memo their co mafia as doc and therefor your cc has to be mafia.
- Stay consistent without being repetitive. Your end goal should be the same of lynching your cc or mafia lead, but don't just repeat the same thing over and over again. As the game goes on, bring up new reasons such as other people's leads or mistakes your cc makes when talking.
- When you find mafia night 1, say who's maf and what mafia skin they have (no skin if none). Only mafia can memo night 1 (and anyone can see bullhorn memo), so fast leads with their skin make you more convicing.
Vigilante
Similar to Cop, vigilantes job is to find the mafia. However, unlike the cop, vigi can only use purge once per game which allows for two types of playstyle depending on preference and Card Skills. Purging night 1 or purging night 2. Like the cop, you're likely to be cc'd by the mafia team even if you purge a mafia night 1. The cop tips for leading the game and dealing with your cc applies to vigilante as well. Remember that purge ignore the skill hypocrisy.
Purging night 1:
- Reasoning: Since a cop/vg cc is most likely to be lynched day 1, purging night 1 can work as a purge if you find mafia or as a cop check if someone's clean. This way you don't risk dying without purging. Some vigi may purge night 1 because they have creed and don't want to die night 1 without purging.
- If you're going to purge night 1, make a code. This will help confirm detective compared to the co maf or a helper claiming det saying you on dead maf only. If you cannot continue making your code after 10 seconds, you can tell people there's a witch with oblivion. Now people know the helper and won't worry about a thief or mad scientist when lynching special roles (assuming witch claims a special role).
- If people ask why you purged night 1, give them the reasoning stated above.
- If you succeed, your role immediately becomes confirmed and if you're not cc'd then you become confirmed day 1 as well, allowing civs to sv day 1.
- If you fail, you will need to get your cc lynched and rely on your team and game sense to find the other mafia and helper.
- If martyr self destructs the same mafia you were going to purge, your skill will be wasted.
- When doctor self heals, martyr self destructs or soldier gets shot and you fail, you won't be able to purge your cc or a suspicious/passive player.
Purging night 2:
- Reasoning: Some players players are good at lynching their cc, don't want to waste their skill or have either creed or runaway which makes purging night 2 easier.
- If you decide not to purge night 1, you must lynch your cc or a mafia. For this you will have to be extremely convicting as you will have no leads whereas your cc will likely have fake leads. Use any information you gain from other roles and any mistakes your cc says to stay alive till night 2.
- In the case of an even number of players alive on day 1, (8 or 6, depending on mart/doc/sol/bm/witch) you automatically make it to night 2 and can purge. If you don't have a cc then ask both doctors (assuming there's a doc cc) to heal you so you can purge docs.
- When you have creed, let the doctor know not to heal you as you will be able to purge even if you get killed.
- Even if you die whether you have creed or not, you basically become proven and your cc will be lynched.
- If you get lynched day 1, you die with your skill and no valuable information left for the civs to work with.
- You won't have leads day 1.
- If a detective checks you, they'll fail. You won't be able to check for oblivion witch either.
Doctor
The Doctor is one of the most important roles in a ranked game but also a challenging one. Doctors are more likely to be counter claimed than cop or vigilante due to cop/vigi cc's being lynched day 1 and doc test being made for night 2. As a doctor you need to claim fast and help lead the game. Pushing for your cc only will make you look suspicious and more likely to be lynched. It's your job to keep important roles alive and make decisions on who you're going to heal.
- As doctor, night 1 you need to make a code incase detective checks you and end on yourself at 1 second or as close to that as you can get. By doing a code till last second the civs are more likely to assume your real since you risk suicide if you're mafia. Ending early or not making a code will seem like a lazy or careful mafia if checked by det.
- Like the other major roles you need to claim fast. A late claim will make you seem like a panicked mafia.
- If you don't get shot/heal successfully night 1, there's a high probability that there will be a doc test for night 2. It's up to you to decide how you want to approach this.
- If you know or feel like real cop was lynched and there's a special role that can stand up to mafia (poli/judge/gang/proph), you should heal yourself. If you die, the civs will be able to lynch a mafia, but they will be killed the following night. If you feel like the mafia will try to kill the special role, you should heal them.
- If you know real cop is alive, you should ignore any tests and heal cop. If you die, your cc will be lynched and cop can still give leads.
- If you're unsure who was lynched, follow the doc test made by a confirmed civ if there is one. Do not follow tests made by your cc or unconfirmed roles unless the majority agrees on the same test
- When you successfully heal night 1, you will not have any cc (unless you random heal which you shouldn't). This will most likely result in self voting day 1. Even if major spec like judge or poli get revealed you should self heal. Inform the civs that you will self heal, so if you die, then there's likely a witch, beast man or mafia with snipe skill.
Special Citizens
Soldier
Soldier is a special role who's goal is to get shot by the mafia. When you get shot, the mafia who shot you will be revealed to you and your role will be revealed to everyone. If you don't get shot night 1, you need to first survive then find a way to survive before thinking of a way to get shot. Hiding specials like poli/proph/gang/rep/judge/etc... like to claim and counter claim soldier, but that's not all. Mafia helpers that don't want to be shot such as spy/hostess/witch/thief also like to claim soldier which makes the game very confusing sometimes.
- You have to options when it comes to getting the mafia to shoot you and staying alive.
- You can claim your real role and act like you're hiding as one of the special roles. Try to make other soldiers seem real if there are any counter claims by saying you're hiding and/or not pushing your cc's. You could also try being very insistent that you're real sol and other sols are hiding so you don't mind the cc's. The main advantage to this is that you won't have to explain why your sol and not a spec unlike the second method.
- If you choose to claim a special role note that you may cc another baiting role like martyr or a real spec. Choosing a spec that is proven night 2 high risk high rewards. Mafia is more likely to shoot a reporter or a gang, but there also a high chance doc tests will be made on you. If you don't get shot, you should reveal your real role as soon as you can day 2 and explain you were baiting (unless doc ends up healing you). Revealing your real role late like when you bait as prophet will make you seem suspicious.
- If there are 2 soldier claims, you should assume one of them is a hiding spec while the other is either a hiding spec or mafia helper.
- When you get shot night 1, you become a confirmed role and should start leading the game. Reveal mafia, make doc tests, tell cops to check hacker or doc cc, etc...
Lover
Lover is one of the strongest special roles you can use for rank. A role that is rarely claimed or counter claimed by mafia, lovers immediately confirm 2/3 special roles present in each rank game. However, when playing as lover you will need to pay very close attention to the chat. Usually the game goes lynching a 3rd spec claim w/no cc day 1, the cc of dead cop or doc day 2, and day 3 you will likely have to choose between the last cc due to skills like clincher and time limit.
- If neither you or your lover gets shot night 1, claim late (after everyone else claimed) so you'll have an understanding of who you're going to lynch. Unlike other roles, lovers should claim late rather than early.
- When your lover dies night 1, your best option is to lynch the least convicting cop cc as the 3rd special role, doc and cop will all be counter claimed.
- When there's a cop and doc cc, lynch the only spec claim. Either the dead person or the 3rd spec is helper. However, don't immediately push the spec. See if you can decide if they're real or not from the way they talk (cooperative or not) or leads they may have like a detective's code.
- In a game only if there's 2 spec cc and only 1 doc or cop, lynch the major role without a cc. No cop cc likely means real cop died, no doc cc means there's a witch or doc random healed and died.
- Inform your lover if you have devotion/vengeance/innocence and make a lover code (a word or a phrase) in case one of you die and there's a psychic. Try to do all of this before the 10 second timer as a witch may hex you or your lover. When there's less than 10 seconds left, both you and your lover should try sending a message to see if either of you are hexed.
- After each day, share your thought with your lover and try to decide who to lynch next during the night.
- Pay close attention to detail. Noticing people teaming, giving same leads or trying to change the subject will help you find the members of the mafia team.
- Lead the game. Since mafia usually cc cop and doc lovers aren't viewed as fake due to there being cc's already. This basically confirms you from the start and allows you tell your citizens who to vote out, make doc tests and who you suspect to be part of the mafia team.
Psychic
As a psychic you should be starting the game by asking or stating the role of the dead player. This is better than claiming psychic then asking the dead as it could seem like you're stalling for time to see all the claims which could lead to framing. This is one of the roles that spy and mafia with instructions like to claim as they won't appear fake if there's a ghoul. Like lovers you rely on chat as your primary source of information in the morning, but at night you're able to sacrifice (awaken) the lynched person to learn if they were mafia or a real citizen.
- One of they key things psychic should do is actively talk with the dead person and the live players. By talking to the dead, you will be more convincing and will be able to ask for their opinion.
- If the dead player appears to be upset then there's a high probability that they're a mafia helper. Rarely, people may even confess if they're extremely upset. The same concept applies to people who seem to panic claim when you ask or hesitate to do so.
- State the lead of the players asap, but check to see if those leads conflict with any other lead from alive players. Some helpers will try to frame real roles through
- There are a few cases when the dead player won't talk or you won't see them talk for a while.
- If the mafia has exorcism, the dead will be awakened, unless they have stone tape.
- If you're hexed, you will not see dead chat until voting begins. When witch has oblivion, you're likely going to assume the above reason as you won't know you were hexed. However, when you see dead speaking after voting starts, tell the players there's an oblivion witch.
- If the player crashes or exits the game, they won't speak.
- At night ask if there are any red (mafia) chats. If there are, let the players know who it was the next day.
Politician
As the politician your vote counts as 2 (or 3 with dictatorship) and you can't be lynched by voting. Being one of the roles that can win for citizens even if outnumbered, you should try to stay alive as the mafia will prioritize you. Hiding as a martyr or soldier is recommended in order to stay alive, but if votes balance and someone still gets voted by "majority", you will be suspected as poli unless you have a counter claim or other people claim hiding roles.
- If there are 8 players alive due to a hex, maf finding bm or doc healing night 1 you have 2 options.
- Option one is self voting, which will reveal you. This is likely going to cause you to die, as most doctors will self heal due to being more useful later in the game then a politician.
- Your 2nd option is to note vote and come up with an excuse (like lag) for why you didn't self vote or reveal yourself day 2. However, mafia may notice this and choose to kill you anyways.
- When there's a thief in the game and the citizens want to lynch it, do not chat. Thief's can steal politician one time to avoid being lynched buying the mafia a valuable extra night. You're less likely to be stolen if you claim soldier over martyr.
- Who you vote is up to you, but if you feel unsure see who confirmed citizens want, if there's any teaming going on or passive players. These things will help you decide who to lynch most of the time.
Reporter
Report is a major role in rank as you can solve counter claim issues, prove hacker and always confirm at least 1 role for everyone. This makes you a high priority target so you it's best you hide day 1 or reveal yourself for a doc test (one of the doctors to heal you) as you're likely going to be using exclusive on them. Be cautious as witches tend to claim reporter because when they fail they can fake being hexed in cases when they've met mafia, the hexed person dies or they hex a real reporter.
- Hide as a soldier, martyr or hacker if you're going to hide. Mafia isn't likely to shoot these roles, especially hacker. Just make sure you quickly clarify you're hacker incase real cop checks you. If a cop claim says you've bounced to someone, you will know they're fake.
- You can also reveal yourself day 1, but you risk being seduced by a hostess or hexed by a witch. Even worse, if real doc was supposed to heal you, the helpers can mess with doc and just kill you then make doc seem suspicious.
- If there are 8 players alive, always hide and report. Try not to report people who are likely to die as your skill will be wasted.
- Cop cc's if there's safe kills for mafia (like a confirmed spec)
- Doc cc's if there are no kills and both cop and doc cc's.
- Any other cc's if there are no major role cc's.
- People who have fake, conflicting or suspicious leads
- If you get voted then you should immediately reveal your role if you're hiding.
Detective
The detective is able to check who another player taps at night. While in unranked you want to hold on to your skill till night 2, in rank leads are important and you should investigate someone night 1. A detective with no leads is a lot more likely to get lynched then a detective that failed. You should have a rough idea of what role someone can be based on the amount of time they tap at night. One tap could be cop, gang, cult leader, fanatic, magician or spy. Two taps is almost guaranteed to be mentalist. More than 2 taps can be mafia, beast man, doc, vigi, reporter, martyr, or a nurse that met doc and doc died. Roles that tap dead people are either priest or psychic. Other roles not mentioned aren't able to tap at night other than thief who stole one the previously mentioned roles. While only 1 mafia member needs to shoot and it's possible that a maf will have no hand, in rank mafs usually claim doc + another role where fake doc will make a code and the other will shoot. Lastly, spies are likely to impersonate you if they find a role that doesn't tap night 1.
- Say your leads quickly and give timings when possible. Say when you checked, interval between codes and any fine detail that will help prove you.
- When it comes to doc codes, see how long docs make the code. Real doctor is going to get as close to 1 sec as they can while mafia may stop between 8 and 4 seconds giving their co mafia enough time to switch shots. A doc that makes code until last second is likely to be real.
- If you find someone tapping night 1 but they claim a role that doesn't/can't tap night 1, you can force them to reveal their real role. If they insist that they're not hiding, you likely found a spy or beast man depending on the number of taps at night.
Ghoul
The ghoul can rob the occupation of the player that died night 1 as long as there only one player that dies. Your strategy depends on the role you ghoul. Try to follow the guide for the role you ghoul with the following tips.
- Mafia may choose to suicide if they have instruction or a spy that meats night 1 does and finds you. This will make real cops job difficult as they'll likely get counter claimed and saying maf sui n1 in rank isn't very believable. If they check you, you will be clean as you were ghoul at night. This also applies to ghouled helpers.
- You can claim ghouled cop, cop (without ghoul part) a spec or ghouled spec. A ghouled cop won't have any leads, a "not ghouled cop" will. Saying ghouled for spec will help making real specs say they're the last and the others are fake.
- Ghouling major roles should be revealed soon, as it will make lynching your fake cc easier.
- When ghouling special roles, always say you're ghouled to help narrow down the list of people. When the 3rd spec is proven you know any other specs are mafia or helper.
Martyr
Martyrs have two abilities that they can use. Self destruction allows you to take a mafia (or thief) if you tap the exact person that shot you, unless you have chain explosion. Your other ability, immolation, allows you take take someone with you if you get lynched. Figure out who the mafia is and keep your bomb on the people you suspect to be mafia. In most cases a counter claim will be lynched on day 1, so you should keep your bomb on the other counter claim who you think is mafia. If you know there's a thief and people want to lynch thief, do not speak to prevent thief from stealing you and using immolation on a major citizen like doc, cop, judge, and any citizen role in general.
- Make a code. Even if you have chain explosion, make a code so detective doesn't fail on you night 1. If you have CE end the code on yourself, if you don't have CE then end on a random person night 1.
- Do NOT mart test when there's 7 or 5 people alive. In these scenarios there's 3 or 2 mafia members and 4 or 3 citizens. Since a night will follow, the mafia has a chance to kill another citizen making the mafia win 2v2 or 1v1 the following day.
- If there are no kills night 1, you can choose to mart test in the following conditions
- In a lovers game, you will be the 3rd and final special role. By taking another special role, you prove yourself, the person you take is a confirmed villain, and any other special roles will also be villains.
- When doc heals night 1 and a mentalist or cop tries to frame you as mafia or you know for sure they're fake, you can reveal and take them. Be sure to tell everyone to self vote other than confirmed roles to prevent being seduced. When you and doc vote yourself, anyone else who balances or doesn't self vote is likely mafia.
- If a breaking news reporter (1) proves a special role (2) then you the martyr will be the 3rd special. Any other spec claims you can take as long as it's not 7 or 5 players alive.
- Keep your bomb on the person you suspect is mafia, but do note if a thief or other mafia shoots you then only you die.
- If you have CE, you can bait as rep, prophet, judge or reverse hide as a soldier. Since soldier is often used to hide roles, some games may end up with 2-3 soldier claims which forces mafia to shoot their cc, fail doc test or gamble on soldiers.
- When someone pushes for mart test on odd # of players (assuming there was a kill night 1) they're likely to be mafia or a mad scientist since they get revived even if you take them.
Priest
As a priest you get to revive a dead player once per game. A role that can change the number of votes in favor of citizens or mafia. In most games it's recommended that you hide as a priest to avoid being hexed or seduced if you plan to revive night 2. However, you shouldn't always revive night 2. think about the roles that were claimed and try to see if the dead player is a citizen or a villain.
- Hide as soldier or martyr so the mafia won't be tempted to shoot you. This also decreases chances of being seduced or hexed. You can also choose to reveal day 1 for a doc test, but this puts both you and the doctor at risk.
- If a psychic or ghoul with specter says that the dead person isn't talking, assume that mafia has exorcism and you cannot resurrect them, unless you have purification.
- When someone gets resurrected that wasn't you, it's most likely a mad scientist or a thief stole you (especially if a mafia gets lynched and revived). If there's a thief, do not talk or they will continue to be able to steal your skill until you use it.
- Roles like cop, doc, prophet, judge and politician are roles you want to resurrect if you choose to hold on to your skill. Resurrecting a prophet for day 4 will become a win if successful
Gangster
Gang can threaten, or more commonly known as punch, a player each night which causes them to not be able to vote the next day. Since it's a role that allows citizens to win despite being outnumbered, the mafia will target you. It's crucial that you don't punch night 1 unless you have extortion else you risk balancing votes day 1 which is likely to results in a mafia win. Prioritize punching hostess as it will prevent her from seducing more players and meeting mafia.
- Even if you have extortion, if you die and punch a citizen then mafia will balance votes day 1.
- If you're unsure who to punch night 2 then don't, but note that a gang that never punches will become suspicious.
- Even if mafia has no votes due to your skill, as long as there is a mafia alive the game will not end.
- You may choose to hide as a soldier so you're less likely to die and less likely to be stolen by a thief.
- If it's revealed that there's a thief, stop talking else they will continue to steal you and could punch other roles like judge and politician which will make citizens lose faster.
Magician
The magician is able to cage 1 player each game during the night, unless they have assistant, which lets them change their cage. When you die, you will take the body of the person you caged while they die in place of you. Do not cage night 1. You should save your cage for night 2 to cage suspicious people, 3rd spec if there's a mart (mart takes magi, magi takes 3rd spec) or a hacker to confirm them. Caging night 1 you risk caging a cop/vigi or doc and if you die while they're caged, you're likely going to lose and have a lot of angry citizens to deal with.
- Magician is the best beast man counter. If you can find out who's beast man, claim a role that mafia want to get rid off such as reporter, prophet or judge. This will make beast man want to eat you and kill themselves as a result.
- Again, don't cage night 1. You won't be able to change cage without assistant and even if you don't die but cage a major role, the mafia can simply kill you instead the role to eliminate them.
- If there's a hacker, you should cage them as you will be able to confirm them and learn if the cop(s) checking them are real or fake.
- Some roles like to hide as magician to not be shot so don't instantly attack your counter claims. You can always ask if they're hiding or act like you're the one hiding.
Hacker
Hacker can find out the occupation of a live player by hacking them (/hack X, where X is a number between 1 and 8) unless seduced by a hostess. If the person you hack dies or you get seduced, your skill will fail so before hacking wait to see who's being lynched then hack. Let people know the role, not the person, you hacked then ask cop(s)/vigi to check you for bounce. If you get hexed, you will learn the role of the player as it happens right when night starts, but your proxy (bounce/redirect) won't work past 10 second mark so mafia can kill you.
- When no one dies night 1 you can hack a cop or spec.
- Cop: Hacking cops will reveal real cop but it lets mafia or helper try to guess your leads. A spy can fake being cop and safely check who you bounce to which will repeat real cops leads too.
- Spec: Hacking spec makes it harder for mafia to guess your leads, but spy can still counter this. You could say you're hacking cops but hack a special and if mafia tries to guess a cop they'll be busted.
- If a cop/vigi gets lynched on day 1, hack the doc cc's and ask the surviving cop as well as role like magi, detective and mentalist to check you for bounce.
- Wait before giving your leads and ask cop and other roles who you've bounced to before revealing your leads.
Judge
As judge for the majority of the game you're going to hide until you're revealed by your skill. Another role that mafia target due to being able to win for citizen despite being out numbered. After you're revealed, only your vote will decide who gets picked for lynching and only your decision to agree or disagree matters. However, thief can steal your role to counter you and hostess can seduce you so if you're not yet revealed try to lynch these roles first if they're in the game. Work with the citizens to find and lynch mafia without being revealed if possible.
- Hiding as soldier is your best option, but magician and martyr also work.
- Once you're revealed and there's no hostess or thief, lynch mafia first as your time may be limited depending on when the doctor dies or if they heal wrong.
- If you have unwritten law, inform the doctor not to heal you when you get revealed as no one can target you for 1 night.
- You can lynch thieves, but don't judge test as they can counter you. When you're stolen majority agree/disagree decides if the person is lynched regardless of your choice.
Prophet
As the prophet you automatically win on day 4 or night 4 even if killed with pioneer, unless hexed by a witch which will counter pioneer. Your goal is to survive long enough to use revelation or lynch the mafia before. Since you can win against the mafia 1v3 you're the most prioritized target for the mafia to kill.
- Hide as soldier, martyr or fake bait by claiming your real role.
- Soldier and other roles claim prophet to bait, so don't instantly go after your cc if you have one.
- If it's clear that the votes are tied or citizens are out numbered, try to act like you think one of the other specs is hiding prophet, but be careful as you can get lynched if you're outnumbered.
Nurse
Nurse is a difficult role for rank as she's hard to prove without bullhorn and may get counter claimed by mafia. When making doc test, try making it so the doc your think is real will heal you. After establishing contact with the doctor, you'll be able to heal after they die or without meeting if you have postmortem. Try not to team with anyone on day one to avoid looking suspicious and keep track of role incase doc dies so you know who to heal.
- If someone counter claims you, they're likely helper who met mafia night 1. Use this info to decide who's real doctor and which cop is fake based on the leads they give.
- Don't try to force doctor to meet you. Doctor won't know if you're real or not and this will seem like you're trying to get doctor killed. If doctor dies, they can't confirm you.
- If you have postmortem and a doctor claim dies, you'll be able to inform the other if real doc died or a mafia suicided.
- Like doctor, you should major roles like cop or roles that help ensure your win like judge, prophet, etc...
- If you meet doctor night 1, try to claim doctor. In that case you can shield the doctor from seduce, hex etc
Mentalist
Mentalist is basically a second cop in ranked games. You're same team leads can prove confirmed citizens or mafias, while different team leads guarantee at least 1 mafia team member. Mafia with hypocrisy will appear as citizen and so will a ghoul who ends up robbing a villain role. If your own leads seem confusing or suspicious to you assume that it's one of these possibilities. Mentalist is a popular claim for mafia helpers as it's easy for mafia to find helper and civs are less likely to lynch mentalists.
- Use your skill with confirmed roles such as doctors that self healed night 1, citizens revealed by hacker or reporter or other proven roles based on pervious leads.
- If there's a hacker, you should check them for bounce.
- Just because 2 people are on the same team doesn't mean they're citizens unless you checked with a proven one.
- Just because the dead person and a person that's alive are different teams doesn't mean the alive person is a villain. Helper can die night 1 just like citizens can.
- If you have strong leads try to lead the game or help the other roles that are leading.
Rank Terms
There are also some terms that come up often in Rank that you should be familiar with:
- SV – Self Vote;
- CC – counter-claim (if you are Doctor, and someone else claims Doctor too, that player is your CC)
- Doc Test – when there are two or more people claiming Doctor, the remaining players set up a doc test. They tell each doctor a specific player that they have to heal, which limits Mafia’s possible shots. For example:
- Let’s say 1 and 2 claim they are Doctor. Someone says “13 24 [doc test]”, meaning “1 heal Player 3, 2 heal Player 4”.
- If 4 gets shot and dies, 2 fails the test and is most likely a Mafioso.
- If 4 gets shot but successfully healed, 2 passes the test and is most likely real Doctor.
- There can be other explanations to failing a Doc Test besides that person being a Mafioso. The real doc might get hexed by Witch or seduced by Hostess and fail to heal. The Mafioso might have [Clincher] or [Snipe] as a Card Skills and kill the civ that was healed by the real doc. That’s why it’s important to think of all the possibilities.
- Doc Code – clicking random people all night before healing as Doctor. This is so if a Detective checks a Doctor, they can prove themselves by saying the code. The reason why it has to be done all night is because Mafiosos can fake Doctor codes too, by pressing random players and then asking the other Mafioso to change the shot. For example;
- 1 is Doctor. At night, they keep pressing/healing 2, then 3, then 4, then 2 again, etc. until the night ends. The next day Detective says “1s code is 234” and Player 1 can prove that they are real.
- Mart/Magi/Poli/Judge Test – lynching the players claiming Martyr, Magician, Politician, or Judge to test their abilities. Beware that helpers like Hostess can ruin the outcome of the test.
- Broken/Failed Det – a Detective that lost his [Deduction] skill.
- Hacker bounce – checking a Hacker claim as Cop/Magician to see if the used skill "bounces" because of Hacker's [Proxy].
- "Lines” – the written text that appears when using certain skills as a civ. Mainly used to test if somebody is lying about their role by asking them to type out the text that appears when using a certain skill. If you plan on playing Rank actively, I recommend writing them down in notes, in case you get asked for a line when you are a Mafioso. While it is looked down on by some to ask for lines, you have to be ready for anything. Examples:
Rank Badges
When playing ranked games, each class has its level of proficiency.
Note - If you lose when you are less than Bronze grade, your skill level does not decrease, but from Bronze grade or higher, your skill level decreases.
Like rank points, the mafia team's proficiency gained upon victory and the proficiency lost in defeat is greater than that of the citizen team.
